summer campers artful fundraiser

Field of Artful Games Fundraiser~ Summer 2013 in a community on Fire Island, NY. Darlene of the Traveling Art Shack spends her summers teaching art with campers but this year was special in regards to storm sandy & community rebuilding.
We all know so many communities in the NY & NJ areas where devastated by the results of Storm Sandy of 2012. The summer community on Fire Island and many communities on this barrier island off the coast of Long Island, NY. The spring season just before summer there was so much cleaning up of debris, rebuilding to do and quite over whelming. So many gracious people made contributions and hard labor efforts to make the Summer of 2013 happen again on Fire Island so we may all enjoy this wonderous sanctuary at the ocean.
I decided to address an idea to my campers the first week of summer camp in the art shack and talk about how we could appreciate our summer this year. How could we help with the rebuilding of our community even during summer into the fall of 2013? We began brainstorming a fundraiser called: Field of Artful Games. An outdoor event to take space on the sports field creating a carnival type theme for children, friends and family to play games, enjoy delicious baked goods, lemonade and hand crafted items for sale. It was a success indeed! We helped raise just over a thousand dollars! We had two Artful Games events, one in July and August. The events were for one hour in duration, .50 cent a ticket and each game, baked good, craft to lemonade cost various ticket prices. It truly was amazing raising that much money in one hour of each event for July and August! It truly showed the out reach of community support for the Field of Artful Games Fundraiser and the campers creative talents to share and shine forth!
Below are just a view of the artful games created by the campers and pictures shared on the day of the events.

Campers Artful Games created from recyced materials!!

BIG MOUTH: The face was created from cardboard and top half attached to a hula hoop and the bottom moves connected to a wooden dowel. The camp counselors moved the mouth up and down while campers and adults try their luck throwing plates of food on a plate. The campers came up with various plates of food from various materials. This was a popular game of the day!

SINK THE SHIP: The Campers design various squirt fish with permanent marker and for extra measure we put mod podge for a sealer. The ship base was made from the soup lid and the sail made with pop sickle stick and foam. The object was to fill squirter with water and try to sink the ship by filling up the base of the ship!

BEE BEAN TOSS! Campers made it fun for this Bean Toss Game. They made mini bee's out of toilet paper rollers, yellow and black felt and pipe cleaners. The bean toss box was painted with various flowers inspired by nature. So tossing the bee into a flower well hence their nature in life to pollinate ! :)
